People Say We Have Some of the Best New Mexican Food in Albuquerque
There is no canned stuff or pre-bottled sala here! We make our Mexican and New Mexican dishes from scratch! From our green chile carne adovada to burritos, tacos, and enchiladas, we are proud to serve authentic New Mexican food.
…if I lived on the other side of town—or, shoot, the other side of the country—I’d make the drive to eat there. It’s that good.

Nice to sit at the bar, but alot has changed since 2020.. needs a major update.. staff is great
We've been enjoying our Papa Felipe's meals for a lot, a lot, of years. We love it. Every once in awhile something special happens . . . and that's what happened last time we visited for dinner. We hit the jackpot and our server was Esther . . . best service we've ever had. Hope she's there next time we come in which, believe me, won't be too long. Go ESTHER!!
This has always been one of our "go-to spots." Went in on Friday (9/15/23) night at about 5:45. There were 4 of us. They weren't that busy as we were able to be sat after only about a 5 minute wait. Our waitress took our drink order and brought them out a few minutes later. Just waters and sodas. A little while later, she took our food order. After about 40 minutes, we still did not have food. We also did not get another visit from our waitress, but another young man did come to take away the chips and salsa, so we thought surely the food would be out soon. We waited patiently. The waitress came and told the table seated directly behind us that their food was on the way (they ordered shortly before us). She apologized to them for the long wait. She said there were a lot of large tables and large orders, so she was helping out in the kitchen. About 10 minutes later, she came back to that table and delivered their food. Shortly thereafter, she finally came by our table, not with food and not with drink refills despite the fact that we had been waiting there for almost an hour with the same drinks and no food. She only said to us, "I don't know if you heard me telling the other table we had some large orders, so your food is taking a while longer, but it should be up next." We did not complain. We were just happy our food would be coming soon. We then overheard someone at the host stand telling someone else that just walked in that the food was taking about an hour or longer to come out before they got sat. They left. We said to ourselves, "I wish they would have told us that when we walked in." Instead, we've been waiting over an hour now, and still no food. But the waitress did tell us that our food was on our way. We waited another 15 minutes and still no food. We finally got up and left. Worst experience at a restaurant that I can remember, not just here but anywhere. The food sucked, as it never came after about an hour and 15 minutes. The service was arguable worse. And to top it off, when we walked out, no one even cared. The host held the door for us and asked how everything was. I let him know that we had been waiting over an hour and only saw our waitress twice and never got any food. All he said was, "Yeah, we're sorry about that." But offered no solutions, just smiled as he watched us walk out. The last time we were here before this had been our worst experience here before, but we still got our food and left without being hungry. This experience takes the cake for the worst ever and seals the deal. We'll never come back. We used to love this restaurant, I'm not sure what happened to make them try and go out of business, but they seem to be working real hard at it. They were even better during COVID than they are now, and that says something. We instead went to El Patron on Montgomery. OMG, the two dining experiences were like night and day. Everything at El Patron was perfect. You might be thinking that's not hard to do after that terrible experience at Papa Felipe's, but seriously. We were sat quickly, they delivered our drinks and food timely. My drink was never empty before I had another one waiting for me. We saw the waiter multiple times throughout the evening. So much so that he felt like a friend when we left. The manager was walking around the restaurant throughout the evening, talking to tables and making sure everything was alright. We talked to him 3 different times. There were mariachis playing in the restaurant, The decor is on point, compared to Papa Felipe's Christmas lights in September.... The food at El Patron was some of the most delicious! If Papa Felipe's wants to know what a good New Mexican restaurant is like, I would suggest that they visit El Patron and take notes. They might learn something. Although I doubt they care, it shows based on how they operate their failing restaurant. El Patron saved the evening that got off to a terrible start at Papa Felipe's and gained a repeat customer in the process.
Delicious food! Great service. Food is mild. Don’t be afraid of the the spicier options.
Soo, not that person... but ya know if ya order with 5 people some might think you would get service... drinks a what not... manager was good quick to assess the situation but really!!!
Great food and service! The chips and salsa were warm and delicious and addictive! The portions were huge. We enjoyed our meal very much.
Haven't visited in six years; I live out of town. Still the best green chile chicken enchiladas ever! Service was equally as fabulous.
Old school Albuquerque with all the NMexican standards. Building is older and the entry carpet could be replaced. Service was exceptional. The crowd was very "obese Walmart which is understandable
Great experience from the moment we walked through the door! Host was friendly, greeted immediately, server was top notch(wish I would have gotten her name) , food was amazing!!
Servers are very attentive. Food is great and the lunch menu portions are a proper size.
Great atmosphere! The food was good and the service decent. Golly, its spicy, though! So glad for the sauce on the side option 🙂
This place is locally owned, been around forever. We used to come here at least once a week, but haven’t been for the past two years since we moved across town. Went recently for lunch and it’s still as amazing as I remember. Always got the combination plate. You can choose three things and one side for lunch. I got the chicken enchilada, chili relleno and a carne adovada crispy taco with a side of potatoes, your choice of red or green chili. Comes with fresh chips and salsa and sopapillas after your meal. Everything was hot and fresh, 💯 recommend. 🤤🤤🤤
Ate at Papa Felipe tonight and loved our Fiesta Verde...very tasty and good. Milad was an excellent server and we'll ask for him again. Very clean and quiet atmosphere. Thank you.
Ordered chicken enchiladas in a pan for a party and there was hardly any green chili chickens sauce making the enchiladas dry. Also they don't provide lettuce and tomato or sour cream with the pan
I will say the food was good, wait staff did a great job serving our large group. The guy at the front well, pretty much a rude person.
Delicious food, margaritas, and warm cozy atmosphere. The Chile isn't too spicy but definitely has flavor and the servers are attentive. Recommend this place if you're craving some good Mexican food!
Papa Felipe's has a special place in my heart. They have been our go-to cater because the prices are affordable and the food is incredible. Trini and her team do amazing at making sure everyone is served and taken care of at your events. That being said, the restaurant is also great, a good place to go for a quick bite since service is fast and efficient. Food never disappoints and the staff is nice and friendly.
Had ants all over table and honey jar that was on table. Informed server of ants on honey and shown the ants. Took honey brought another and said will inform owner to spray with ants still on table. Must be used to have ants running around on table. We watched as the ants seemed to be in races against each other on the wall and table. Food mediocre. Steak tough. Food bland. Potatoes wierd. Not going back. Go but heed warning ⚠️
Great food! The price is reasonable for what you get, and the atmosphere is pleasing.
The food here is great and it was delicious! The service sucked. The waitress we got rushed us and made us pay our bill right away. We had just got our food. Then, after the other waitresses couldn't be bothered to check on us because we "paid" already. You are better off just doing take out or ordering from Doordash. Lynette was our waitress, if you get her ask for a different area. Our food took forever to come out and there were people who came after us that got their food before us. Some Father's day celebration we had when we decided to eat here. Never again just take out from now on.
We recently moved here and wanted real Mexican food. Papa Felipe's was highly recommended and it did not fail. I have had some great Mexican food but this was above and beyond the best. It tastes just like homemade, which it is! The best part was the service.Esther was exceptional with impeccable customer service. We will go back again because of Esther..... And the food!
Was our go to place with my in-laws. Recently our visit took a turn. No wait time but service was slow. Figured short staff so gave it some patience. Eventually was served our drinks. Then waiting around for the server to come back to place our order. At this point we were ready to leave. We ended up ordering and to my surprise my food was cold, my beans were dry as if they were sitting out. My mother in laws food was also cold. We kindly paid for the meal but went home just to make another. Disappointed to say the least. I hope management can bring back the old atmosphere and not the depressing one we walked into.
They are back! Stopped going during the pandemic, as the food did not seem as good as before. Went last night and they are back. My favorite place to eat. Perfection. Fast service, great food, nice people. Brandon was our server and he was attentive and very nice. We will be going back soon.
We visited on a recommendation, and after having an excellent experience this was one of the first places we thought of when we needed to grab dinner on a recent Saturday night.Despite being busy when we arrived, we were seated immediately. Service was excellent, friendly and engaging, despite clearly having a lot of ground to cover. Our waitress seemed to have 1/3rd of the restaurant, and yet managed to be everywhere she needed to be - amazing. There were several large groups and the restaurant was busy, so we were warned there may be a wait for food - but that didn't happen, dinner was brought promptly. As we expected, it was as excellent as we remembered. If you're looking for New Mexican-style Mexican, you can't go wrong here. We'll certainly be back!
I wasn't expecting this place to be good but I was really wrong, its a really nice place and the food was good, big portions. Just know they say it is Mexican food but is new mexican food with mexican names 🙂
Since we had never been here before, me and my husband ordered the Plato Grande. It has a sample of everything we wanted to try. And it was all delicious. From the chili rellano to the chicken enchilada. And while I like my guacamole with more chunks the flavor was delicious and fresh. My husband (who never eats guac) loved their creamy style guac. There was so much that what we took he with us after we ate looked like a take out order. 😂We will definitely be going back.
Oh Man, I was Amazed that we, as a party of 10 were seated very quickly, Atmosphere was Comfortable, waitstaff though thinned out ,we were well taken care of, We also tipped well. Thank You Waiters for a Wonderful Evening!
I saw online that they serve a puffy taco so I had that with beans and corn. It was delicious, more like a native taco!! Also had a pomegranate margarita, probably won't order that again. They were short staffed so be patient. Our food came out quickly and our server was friendly. Loved that puffy taco!!
